Strange to think I last updated this now page in September 2025, and it's almost exactly a year later. Maybe the start of autumn is the natural threshold in my year - a breathing out, a harvesting. I'm on the train into London, watching the sun-bleached fields fly by, listening to Florist. I just spotted a tiny deer and a magpie standing in the middle of a clearing, like I accidentally saw someone else's fairytale.
I've been working on a lot of big projects at work and managing other people for the first time. For the last few weeks I've felt pretty exhausted, although the summer has also been filled with so many lovely fun things. I had an incredible time at Electromagnetic Field - my second time there. We helped organise a beautiful wedding. We spent two glorious weeks in Italy. I spent a weekend in a castle playing D&D with my friends.
I've been sneaking time away from work to fix some longstanding bugs and make some improvements in my open source projects - Gathio, BlogFlock, and Paperstack. I often feel the itch to build something new and sometimes I have the presence of mind to remind myself that people love and use my existing projects and would love it even more if I just fixed some bugs. But I have also managed to rebuild this website in Lua so I could hand-write an ActivityPub server for my blog.
I've recently got a Remarkable tablet and have been loving writing on it and using it to help my thinking. I've started keeping a journal and have been practicing meditating more frequently, although like all things in my life that are shiny and new, it remains to be seen how long these things will hold my interest, and if I'll be able to convert that interest into habits, or if my brain simply doesn't work that way.
